On Friday we had a trip to Himeji to see the famous castle. Lots of movies have been filmed here including Kurosawa's 'Ran' & 'Kagemusha'. Oh, & Tom Cruise even flew in by helicopter to film a few scenes for 'The Last Samurai'. The castle completely dominates the skyline & is nicknamed 'the white heron' as it seems to be perched over the town.
Had the funniest experience at the automatic ticket machine on the way to Himeji. We got a bit confused & thought we'd try pressing the red 'assistance call' button, not really expecting anything to happen. We got a bit of a shock when a small panel suddenly removed intself behind a timetable & a woman's head came through smiling. The hole was only about the size of her head. When we explained what we needed she took her head back in & pushed her arm through instead to reach around & press the right buttons on the machine for us. She then smiled, nodded & replaced the panel as though it had never been there. We were stunned. Does she sit there all day in the ticket machine behind the panel just on the off chance that someone presses the red button? It was like a scene from 'Alice in Wonderland'.
