Keep the red flag flying

Everywhere we go in Kerala the Communist Party is out in force. In Alleppey we see this shrine to the party & all over the state we've seen posters in Malayallam for an upcoming function. When our bus to Kumilly hits a road block all becomes clear. The 19th annual Communist Party of India conference for the Kerala & Bengal division is taking place here today. That would explain the jeeps full of drunk, flag flying comrades overtaking our bus all the way here. A bloke called Charles on our bus offers to help us walk the 2km still to go to the town centre & find us a guesthouse.

The march that was blocking the road turns out to be great fun. There's a real carnival atmosphere & the usual drum & brass bands & singing. We feel a bit like celebrities walking through the march being grinned & waved at all the way.
