Janet Frame's House

Oamaru is famous for its penguin colonies and also for being the childhood home of the writer Janet Frame. You can visit Frames's former home at 56 Eden Street, a place that appears in many of her books. As I'm currently engrossed in the third & final volume of her autobiography I'm very excited to visit Janet's home. We're met at the door by the wonderfully exuberant & enthusiastic curator, Ralph who could inspire anyone to read Frame's books, I'm sure. He's a really warm host, full of stories about Janet and really helps bring alive her presence in the house.

I especially love the front of the house which I think looks like a child's drawing. Lots of items in & around the house are remaining from Janet's time here including the iron bedstead used as a gate in the back garden. It's wonderful to visit somewhere like this when a writer's stories are so fresh in your mind.
