The Whales

It's very windy & rainy today, not ideal whale watching conditions & unlike the boat trips you are not given a refund for the plane trip if you don't see any whales so we really have our fingers crossed about seeing one. Paul is the first to spot it, a male sperm male about 18 metres long. These whales usually stay in deep water for about 45 minutes to 2 hours at a time. They come up to the surface only for around 10-15 minutes before diving down again to continue feeding. We watch the whale spouting through its blowhole & exposing its head & back above the water for about 5 minutes before it raises its huge tail out of the water & dives. From the air you can see the whole of the whale through the water & get a real impression of its size. Unfortunately our photos are terrible. We found that it's pretty hard to take good pictures while you're circling round & round in a small aircraft in turbulence & trying not to be sick so I've included a photo from the company's brochure too as it's a lot more like what we actually saw.
