It was raining on our first day in the Tongariro National Park making it a bad day for doing the crossing, so instead I set off on the Northern Tongariro circuit with Aviad, an Israeli lad. We walked up to the Tama lakes, a 17km round walk. Here you see the blue, lower lake with a rainbow and Mt Ruapehu in the distance and obscured by clouds. Then there is the grey upper Tama lake which was clear for a moment before the clouds came in. We were wet through by the time we got back but the woollen hat kept my ears snug.
