Kyoto Gardens

The gardens around the temples that we visit on the Philosopher's path in Kyoto are so different from Western gardens. Moss is very big here (hence the separate display showing the different kinds). Very strange for people who are used to thinking of moss as a pest but it's used so beautifully here. There is lots of sand too which is raked into patterns or formed into perfect mounds like this one. The branches of the trees and shrubs are supported so that they grow in particular directions.
