When we arrive at Hida No Sato we are offered wellies to wear & bits of rope to tie around the feet. Apparently this helps you not to slip so much. It seems to work pretty well and gets a good testing on the icy paths. In one of the houses we get to see the winter footwear possibilities of centuries past. These include wicker snow boots, straw flip flops and enormous wooden sandals worn by a famous sumo of old. Even though our toes have gone numb I think we are pretty lucky.
