Exploring the Market

The range of produce on offer at the market is breathtaking. Pilar is a regular here & the vendors all know her well. We buy some of the fresh masa corn dough in the first picture which we'll use to make our own tortillas.

From the second stall we buy fresh corn, jalepeno peppers & several kinds of avocado one of which has an edible skin with a aniseed flavour.

The third picture shows chayotes & some of the huge variety of chillies on offer. We buy the large, dark green poblanos which we'll stuff with squash flowers, courgette, onion & Oacaxan cheese for our main course of 'chiles rellenos'.

The wild mushrooms & blackberries on show in the fourth picture are being sold by an elderly woman who has forraged for them herself & come to town to sell her finds. The blackberries will form part of our dessert.

All the different coloured dried chillies in the final photo are used for making each of the seven different varieties of mole that Oaxaca is famous for. We buy some of the smoky flavoured pasilla chillies to accompany our black bean soup.
