Last night we went to see some Mexican wrestling and had one of the most bizarre yet fun nights of the trip so far. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take cameras into the ring so I've taken some snaps of our program instead.
This kind of wrestling is hugely popular in Mexico. You can buy replica wrestling masks all over Mexico City & we even have an image of one on our hostel shower curtain.
Most of the wrestlers wear elaborate sequinned costumes. One of the ones we watched was called 'Felino' and wore a black leotard & mask complete with a furry white bib to create that feline effect. Just looking at him had us in stitches. It's pure theatre & a lot of fun to watch. The wrestlers make Big Daddy & Giant Haystacks look like amateurs.
The action takes place inside & outside the ring & sometimes even involves members of the audience. The biggest match of the night involved a wrestler called Dr Wagner. There was almost a riot when his two team mates decided to turn against him leaving him prostrated in the ring. Hundreds of cups of beer were flung into the ring by angry spectators. We haven't had so much fun in ages.
